Electric vs Propane Water Heaters for Van Life: An Honest Breakdown
This is one of the most common forks in the road for new builders, and honestly, there's no universally "right" answer. It depends on what you already have on board and how you like to travel.

Propane's Biggest Advantage Is Speed and Independence From Electricity
Tankless propane units heat water on demand, so you get a genuinely continuous hot shower without worrying about running out of stored capacity. They're also electricity-light, which matters if your solar/battery setup is modest. The tradeoffs: you need a propane system in the van (tank, regulator, lines), the unit typically mounts outside or vents outside for safety, and you're managing propane refills alongside whatever else uses propane in your rig.
Electric Storage Boilers Are Simpler to Install and Live With
No combustion, no exhaust routing, no propane lines to run. You just need 12V and/or 110V power, which most van electrical systems already have. The tradeoff is capacity: you're working with a fixed tank size, so a long shower for two people back-to-back will outpace what a compact unit can deliver, unless you size up or slow down your usage.
A Third Option Some Builders Forget
Pairing hot water with your existing diesel air heater (if you have one) through a hydronic or air-flow-heat exchanger. This basically gives you "free" hot water any time your cabin heater runs, without adding a separate fuel source. It's not a fit for every build, but if you're already running a diesel heater for warmth, it's worth a look before you add a whole separate system.
Our Honest Take
If you're a first-time builder without an existing propane system, electric is usually the lower-friction starting point. If you already have propane on board and want restaurant-quality endless hot water, tankless propane is hard to beat. If you're running a diesel heater already, look at combo systems before you buy either.
