Most solo vanlifers use somewhere between 2 and 3 gallons a day if they're not showering in the van (using a gym, truck stop, or campground shower instead), and closer to 4–6 gallons a day if they are. That's total water use, not just hot water, but it gives you a sense of scale.

A quick gut-check: a 5-minute shower with a standard flow rate uses roughly 10 gallons. A low-flow vanlife shower head cuts that dramatically, often to 1.5–2 gallons for the same shower length, because you're pausing the flow while soaping up instead of running it continuously. That's the real trick: pairing a smaller tank with smarter fixtures instead of just buying a bigger tank.

For reference, compact electric boilers in the 3–6 liter range (roughly 0.8–1.6 gallons) are enough for most people's daily rinse-off or dish-washing needs, especially since these units mix with incoming cold water at the tap rather than delivering the tank volume at full temperature. A 3-liter tank doesn't mean 3 liters of usable hot water. It often stretches further once mixed down to shower temperature.

If you're building for two people showering daily, or you want a genuine "take your time" shower experience, step up to a 9–10 liter unit or consider a system that also draws heat from your engine or cabin heater so you're not solely dependent on stored tank volume.
