Sprinter Van Water Heater Install: What to Expect

Sprinter builds have a few quirks worth knowing before you pick a water heater. The most common mounting spots are under the passenger-side sliding door bench, near the fuel tank on the driver's side, or tucked into a galley cabinet if you're routing plumbing that direction anyway.

If you're going the engine-coolant route, the process involves tapping into the heater core lines. This is a bigger job than an electric install and typically benefits from a pre-configured install kit built for Sprinter's specific coolant routing, rather than improvising fittings on the fly. Cutting into coolant lines without the right kit is one of the more common "learned the hard way" stories in Sprinter build forums.

If you're going electric (12V, 110V, or dual-voltage), the install is considerably more straightforward: secure mounting, plumb the inlet/outlet into your existing fresh/hot water lines, and wire the power connection. Compact rectangular units tend to fit well under the rear bench seating common in Sprinter layouts, where cylindrical tanks can be a tighter squeeze.

One thing worth double-checking regardless of heater type: cold-weather insulation around your plumbing lines. Sprinters have decent underbody protection, but exposed lines near the heater can still be vulnerable in serious cold if not insulated properly.

Whichever direction you go, watching a real install video before you start (several exist from both manufacturers and independent van builders) will save you more time than reading any spec sheet.
